Plumbing contractor equipment essentials for a new business
A plumbing contractor equipment checklist that names the drain machine, camera, press tool and safety gear a new business actually buys first.
What to take away
- Plumbing contractor equipment essentials start with a RIDGID K-400 drum machine, a RIDGID SeeSnake camera, a RIDGID KJ-2200 jetter, a Milwaukee M18 press tool and a General Pipe Cleaners Power Rooter. Those five cover most of the service work a new plumbing contractor sells.
- Buy the drain machine and the camera first. Rent the jetter and the excavator until the work is on the schedule every week.
- Permission and safety come before spending. A license class decides which machines you may legally run.
- Set the stock list from your own supply house receipts, not from a catalog.
- Every machine needs a service interval and a replacement trigger written down before it earns its first dollar.
What the first truck actually carries
A new plumbing contractor buys equipment in a fixed order. The service menu sets that order. Drain cleaning funds the start. Fixture work and repipes come next. Excavation comes last, and usually on a rental.
Here is the core list, with a named model, what it is and why it earns a place on the truck.
| Equipment | What it is | Typical price and why it is on the list |
|---|---|---|
| RIDGID K-400 drum machine | Drum drain cleaner with a 3/8 inch by 50 foot cable | $1,400 to $2,000 new; clears kitchen, bath and floor drains, the highest volume service call |
| RIDGID K-1500 sectional machine | Sectional rods, 3/4 inch, for 3 to 8 inch lines | $5,000 to $9,000; main line work the drum machine cannot reach |
| RIDGID SeeSnake microReel | Push reel with a 1.5 inch camera head and a monitor | $2,500 to $4,000; shows the customer what the cable found and sells the repair |
| RIDGID KJ-2200 or KJ-3100 jetter | 3,000 to 4,000 psi electric unit with a hose reel | $1,500 to $4,000; grease and root work the cable cannot finish |
| Milwaukee M18 Force Logic press tool | Battery hydraulic press for copper and PEX fittings | $1,800 to $2,800 with batteries; faster than solder on service work, no open flame in a finished room |
| General Pipe Cleaners Power Rooter | Hand or power auger for branch lines up to 2 inches | $500 to $900; small blockages where a sectional machine is overkill |
| Zoeller M53 or M98 submersible pump | 1/2 to 1 hp utility pump with a discharge hose | $200 to $450; emptying a pit, a tank or a flooded basement |
| RIDGID aluminum pipe wrench set | 10, 14, 18 and 24 inch wrenches | $300 to $450; every threaded connection on the truck |
| Milwaukee copper tubing cutter and deburring tool | Cutter for copper, PEX and plastic | $40 to $90; cuts every material on the menu |
| TurboTorch propane torch kit | Torch, striker and solder | $60 to $120; copper work where a press tool will not fit |
| Milwaukee M18 drill and driver kit | 18V, two batteries | $250 to $400; anchoring, cutting and fixture work |
| RIDGID 12 gallon wet/dry vacuum | With a cartridge filter | $120 to $200; water cleanup on every call |
| Hand tools | Basin wrench, auger, screwdrivers, pliers, tape, level, flashlight | $300 to $600; the small tools that stop a second trip |
The reasoning behind the tiers, the layout and the buy-versus-rent triggers sits in the equipment and setup guide for plumbing contractors. This page is the version you carry.
Permission comes before the purchase
- I have confirmed with the state plumbing board which license class covers the work on my service menu.
- I have confirmed with each local building department which work needs a permit and who may pull it.
- I have asked the water and sewer authority about backflow and cross connection requirements for the work I intend to sell.
- If I will touch fuel gas, I have confirmed separately what credential that requires.
- My insurance covers the equipment I am about to buy, in the vehicle and at the yard.
- I know which of my services fall inside the Environmental Protection Agency's renovation, repair and painting requirements for contractors. That rule covers firm certification and lead-safe work practices for work disturbing painted surfaces in older housing and child occupied facilities.
Nothing below this block matters until every line above is checked. A sectional machine is useless if your license class does not cover the drain you were called to clear. In Texas, a Master Plumber license is required to contract for plumbing work. A journeyman cannot.
The ongoing version of these obligations is set out in the licensing and compliance guide.
Safety gear that leaves the shop
- I have written a safety program rather than a set of intentions, using the structure in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's recommended practices for safety and health programs.
- Personal protective equipment for sewage exposure is on the truck, and there is a hygiene plan that survives a bad day.
- I know what applies to excavation and trenching, and I will not sell that work until the controls exist.
- I know what applies to confined space entry, and I understand it is a program rather than a purchase.
- Hot work controls are in place for soldering and torch work near combustibles.
- Eye, hand, hearing and respiratory protection match the work actually on my menu.
- There is a first aid kit, a fire extinguisher with a current inspection, and a written procedure for reporting an incident.
The gear itself is short. It includes:
- 3M 6000 series half mask respirator with 60923 cartridges for sewer gas
- Milwaukee safety glasses and a face shield
- Klein Tools rubber gloves
- Klein Tools knee pads
- 3M ear plugs for the jetter
- a change of clothes that stays in the truck
Loading the vehicle
- The vehicle's rated payload is written down, and the loaded weight stays inside it.
- Heavy items sit low and forward of the rear axle.
- Everything on the truck is visible without unpacking a bin.
- Items used on nearly every job are reachable without climbing inside.
- Every item has one labeled home, so someone else can restock it.
- Ladders and long stock are secured for a hard stop, not just for the drive.
- There is a photograph of the finished layout, kept as the restocking standard.
A 2026 Ford Transit 250 has a maximum payload around 4,000 to 4,500 pounds depending on configuration. A Ram ProMaster 2500 is in the same range.
A sectional machine and a full cable set weigh more than most owners expect. Weigh the loaded truck once, at a scale, and keep the ticket.
Consumables and stock
- There is a written stock list with minimum quantities.
- Stock is checked on a fixed day, not when something runs out.
- Every supply house trip is recorded with the item that caused it.
- The most frequent trip-causing items have been added to the stock list.
- Material for the most common two or three jobs is aboard in enough quantity for a normal day.
The usual trip-causers include these items:
- fittings
- supply lines
- wax rings
- Teflon tape
- pipe dope
- ferncos
- test caps
- drain cleaner
Common names on the shelf include Oatey wax rings, Fernco couplings, Hercules Teflon tape, Blue Monster pipe dope and Oatey test caps. Track your own for a month before you trust anyone else's list.
Documentation and payment
- I can produce a quote, an invoice and a receipt without improvising.
- Photographs and job notes attach to a job record rather than living on a phone.
- Card payment works on site, and I know what it costs me.
- Purchase records for every major asset are filed with the asset, meeting the Internal Revenue Service standard for records that clearly show income and expenses with supporting documents behind each entry.
- Warranty documents and serial numbers are recorded somewhere other than a drawer.
A QuickBooks Simple Start plan runs about $30 a month as of 2026. A Square reader costs 2.6 percent plus 10 cents per swipe. Jobber starts near $49 a month for one user.
Maintenance and replacement
- Every major machine has a service interval and a named person responsible for it.
- Every major machine has a written replacement trigger stated as a condition rather than a date.
- There is a plan for the day the vehicle is off the road.
- Rental sources for tier three items are confirmed and their hours are known.
Cables kink, camera reels fray and jetter pumps lose pressure. A machine that fails mid-call costs a return trip and a customer. A typical service interval for a drum machine is every 25 hours of run time. Replace a kinked 3/8 inch cable rather than cutting it back.
What the customer sees
- Vehicle and uniform presentation match the way I describe the business, because the truck is the first impression on every job. What that impression has to support is covered in the marketing and growth guide.
- Floor protection and cleanup materials are aboard, in quantity.
- There is a way to leave written findings with the customer at the end of the visit.
Trimaco floor covers, a Cintas uniform and shoe covers cost little. A camera screen turned toward the homeowner does more selling than any brochure. Show the blockage, then quote the repair.
Before the second technician
- The layout photograph and stock list are good enough to hand to someone else.
- The second truck is specified from the same menu, not copied from the first out of habit.
- Supervision requirements under my license are written down and understood by everyone affected. The structure for bringing someone in sits in the hiring and training guide.
- Tool accountability is definedwho holds what, and what happens when something goes missing.
The whole sequence this checklist sits inside is described in the phased plan for starting a plumbing contractor business.
Common questions
Do I need everything on this list before my first job?
You need the permission and safety blocks before any job, plus the drain machine, hand tools and camera for the services you have published. For a drain cleaning start, that means a RIDGID K-400 and a SeeSnake microReel. The jetter, pump and press tool can follow as the work arrives.
Should I buy or rent the jetter?
Rent until jetting appears on the schedule most weeks. A RIDGID KJ-2200 costs $1,500 to $2,000. A rental yard charges $80 to $150 a day in most markets. Do the arithmetic: rental days times daily rate against purchase price plus maintenance.
How often should I replace a drain machine?
Set the trigger by condition, not by calendar. Cable wear, drum runout, motor heat and repair frequency tell you when a machine is finished. The cost of a failed call is the number that decides it.
How is this different from a tool list I could find online?
A tool list assumes it knows what you sell. This one is built backward from your own menu and your own jurisdiction, which is why several lines send you to an office rather than a store.
